Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey are first and foremost inventors. Their timepieces are sophisticated, meticulously decorated manifestations of the fundamental technical inventions emitting from Greubel Forsey’s creative cauldron. The central element of their approach is a unique platform for research and development called EWT - Experimental Watch Technology. EWT is equipped with all of the facilities necessary to develop and implement ideas, to analyse, test and experiment, and to fabricate components and mechanisms. EWT has already resulted in six fundamental inventions, three of which have already been successfully incorporated into finished timepieces, and Greubel Forsey’s continuous creative process ensures that there are many more projects in the EWT pipeline.
Right from the beginning Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have had no hesitation in starting from a blank sheet of paper in order to develop their innovative complications with technical rigour and aesthetic harmony. Whether designing a unique gear profile or a particularly complex mechanism, a solid base in theory augmented by results from experiments in EWT enable Greubel Forsey to go beyond existing horological horizons and to set new standards in the art of technical/mechanical watchmaking.
Greubel Forsey launched at Baselworld 2004 with the presentation of the fruit of their first invention, the Double Tourbillon 30°. The timepieces on display were finely finished down to the very last detail, a clear indication of the meticulous, uncompromising approach of their creators. A highly selective retail network for worldwide distribution was established.
A second invention, the Quadruple Tourbillon (in prototype form), was unveiled the following year featuring two double tourbillons connected via a spherical differential. Baselworld 2006 heralded the presentation of Greubel Forsey’s third invention, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes, which was well advanced in EWT takes advantage of the rapid rotation of a single inclined tourbillon to improve timekeeping.
Now well established, in 2006 Greubel Forsey welcomed Richemont as an outside shareholder with a 20 percent participation in the share capital. This confirmed the enduring quality of the relationship between Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey and several Richemont companies spanning two decades. Greubel Forsey found its elevated cruising speed, simultaneously advancing on developing fundamental inventions, validating finished timepieces as well as creating new variations of existing models.
